Know the markdown calendar
- End-of-season clearance (roughly 6-8 weeks after a season starts) is when the real cuts happen, 40-70% off is normal.
- Loyalty program early access to sales is free to join at nearly every major retailer and often the difference between good stock and picked-over racks.
- Size-run patience pays literally: the last sizes in a run get marked down hardest.
The purchase stack
- Click through Rakuten before checking out online, clothing retailers often run some of the highest cashback rates on the whole platform.
- Match a store coupon or loyalty reward on top, most brands let these stack with sale pricing.
- Scan the receipt in Fetch and check Ibotta for any active apparel offers.
The resale layer: for kids' clothes, outerwear, and anything worn briefly, resale marketplaces (Poshmark, ThredUp, and similar) routinely beat new-with-tags pricing by 50%+, and selling your own barely-worn items funds the next round.
Know the return window before you buy
Sale and clearance items often carry shorter or final-sale return terms. Read the return policy at checkout, not after, it's the detail that turns a good deal into a bad one.
