The Dining Stack: Get Paid 4 Ways Every Time You Eat Out
Eating out is the budget line everyone tells you to cut. We'd rather keep the dinners and stack four separate rewards on the same check. None of these change where you eat or what you pay, they just pay you back for it in layers.
The four layers
- Base layer: airline dining programs (Rewards Network). AAdvantage Dining, MileagePlus Dining, SkyMiles Dining and the rest are all run by Rewards Network. Link a card once, then earn miles automatically any time you eat at a member restaurant. Fully passive after setup. One program per card, so pick the airline you actually fly. Join a dining program
- Booking layer: Seated. Book or check in through Seated at participating restaurants and get a meaningful percentage back as gift card credit, sometimes up to 30%. This is the biggest single layer when it hits. Get Seated
- Offer layer: Upside. In many areas Upside has restaurant offers alongside gas. Claim before you pay, real cash back out to your bank. Our review · Get Upside
- Payment layer: your best dining card. Whatever card in your wallet pays most on restaurants, use that one. We're not pitching you a new credit card, just use what you have correctly.
One dinner, worked out
| Layer | On an $80 dinner | Back to you |
|---|---|---|
| Seated | 15% back in gift card credit | +$12.00 |
| Dining program | ~5 miles per $1 at a VIP tier | +~$5.00 in miles |
| Upside | 5% restaurant offer claimed | +$4.00 |
| Card rewards | 3% on dining | +$2.40 |
| Total | Same dinner, same tip | ~$23.40 |
Figures are illustrative and depend on restaurant participation and your program tier. Your check will vary.
The 20-minute setup
- Pick your airline, join its dining program, link the card you always use for restaurants.
- Install Seated, connect it, and get in the habit of checking it before picking a spot.
- Turn on Upside restaurant offers if they're live in your area.
- Done. From here the stack mostly runs itself.
Fine print worth knowing
- A card can only be enrolled in one Rewards Network dining program at a time.
- Dining programs have bonus tiers that unlock with a few transactions and a review, worth doing early.
- Seated availability is best in bigger metros right now.
- If a restaurant is in multiple programs, test your own stack once and keep receipts.
FAQ
Do I need to be a road warrior for the dining program layer to be worth it? No, you just need a card you already use to eat out. The dining programs earn per dollar at member restaurants regardless of how often you fly. What if my favorite restaurant isn't in any of these programs? Then you're back to just the payment-layer card rewards for that meal, still worth using your best dining card. Coverage varies a lot by city and cuisine. Do these programs conflict with each other? Not really, each one tracks a different signal, the linked card charge, the booking or check-in, the claimed offer, so they mostly run independently on the same transaction. Is this worth setting up for occasional dining out? If you eat out a few times a month, the setup pays for itself within the first few visits and then runs on autopilot. If you rarely eat out, a good dining rewards card alone is probably enough.
